The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra at The Neilson, ACO Pier 2/3: Review by Cynthia Ning

It was a beautiful clear night, and we were invited out to see The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra playing ‘New Perspectives’ at The Neilson, ACO Pier 2/3. The venue was stunning with a glass elevator entry, and an open balcony overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge before being led into a wooden-panelled room, designed to best compliment the sound of the orchestra.

It was a full house, and we were fortunate enough to be seated in the front row. Nicole van Bruggen welcomed us to the show and our eyes were drawn to the intricate detailing that was unique to each wind and string instrument. I was delighted to learn more about them in the program which I highly recommend picking up.

The musicians breathed life into their instruments and moved as one through small gestures and eye contact, there was great care and trust within the orchestra. You could feel the rhythm and movements of each note surrounding the audience, taking us on a playful and whimsical wonderland.

Violinist Jenna Sherry captivated the audience as the concertmaster, performing technically complex solos combining long strokes and finger plucking. She led wonderfully with smooth transitions and was patient with each pause to allow her companions to tune in and take a breather. The ensemble filled the space with a radiating presence and truly brought music to my ears.

The audience followed the tradition of not clapping between movements and only until the end of the musical piece which was a lovely touch. The orchestra transcended our expectations, nods and whispers of joy were shared during the 20-minute interval. The patrons roamed around the venue and had a first-class view of the Sydney Opera House and the light show.

The second half of the program was livelier, and we were entranced by the dramatic and emotional melody. It was pleasing to see the musicians enjoy themselves on stage, embodying the music and savouring each beat. Before we knew it, the show had come to an end.

It was delightful to see the joy that classical music brought to everyone. A memorable night out and an ode to composers Beethoven and Farrenc who have produced timeless pieces that will continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.

This is a carefully curated selection of work, suitable for all to enjoy, and is the perfect opportunity to share the gift of music with a loved one or as a surprise on a romantic date.

The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra will be touring around Australia for a limited time only and this is an opportunity to support and celebrate local and international classical musicians. Make sure to book in as soon as you are able to avoid missing out.
